Now that we’re enhancing that recovery process, they’re able to perform better on the Monday, giving us a whole extra day of training that would otherwise be lost to stiffness and soreness... it's an easy win

What is your best piece of coaching advice?

Too many people get caught up in the 1%’s and the marginal gains when they are nowhere near getting a good handle on the other 99%. My best bit of advice is to grasp a firm handle on the lowest hanging fruit. Sleep, nutrition fundamentals and preparation are key. Without these, you can have the best programme and the best coach in the world and still fall short of the mark.

What is your best mental performance tool?

When the whistle goes, the bell rings, or the start-gun shoots, we fall back on our training and preparation. There’s no value in micro-analysing decisions once competition starts – instead focus on how you will react to moments of success and moments of adversity within the competition. For example, in Football, it is almost guaranteed that during the course of the game, you’re going to give away possession, or you’re going to make the wrong decision. Rather than spending the pre-match focusing on these moments, accept that they’re inevitable and formulate strategies that are going to help ground you in the moment when they do occur.

What has been the toughest experience in your career and what did you learn from it?

When I agreed to head up the Physical Performance Support at West Ham United Women, I was doing so on a complete blank slate. The club had gone from amateur, to full-time and professional, overnight. 7 new members of staff, 18 brand new players, 10 nationalities, and a new training ground to navigate – myself and the other staff had just 4 weeks to plan a pre-season and to put protocols and structures in place. We were essentially setting up a professional football club and trying to run one simultaneously. I learned a lot and quickly. That first season culminated in an FA Cup Final at Wembley, so we must have done something right!

Paul's Top KYMIRA Sport Products

What were your thoughts on KYMIRA initially vs once you actually tried it?

As a practitioner I always try and to be open-minded yet critical. When I first came across KYMIRA I was impressed with many of the claims that were made, even more so after I dug a little deeper to find that they were in fact substantiated by research literature. Seeing case studies of the impact that KYMIRA products have across a wide-spanning population impressed me. That was confirmed after I was able to sample some of the products both personally and within my role at West Ham. Many of the players shared my enthusiasm, and we saw a notable decrease in reports of soreness and fatigue after the implementation of KYMIRA products.

What does your training ecosystem look like and what recommendations do you make to people looking to use KYMIRA in their training?

Recommendations vary depending on the individual needs of the client/athlete, but I actively look to tick three boxes to maximise the benefits KYMIRA has to offer. An item for preparation, an item for performance, and one for recovery. I personally always warm up and do any prep-work using the leggings and socks as it has a notable decrease on the time spent doing prep work getting joints moving comfortably. For performance I generally stick to wearing the shorts if I’m on the bike, or the crew socks/leggings if I am out running trails. I then also have another pair of leggings I use exclusively for recovery. I’ll often sleep in these after a high intensity run to make sure I can still be effective the following day.

For those with rehabilitation needs, I recommend that KYMIRA be used for the targeted site on a regular basis. This, tied into nutritional interventions, can have a marked increase on reducing unwanted inflammation, reducing immobilisation time and atrophy, and speeding up the recovery process in its entirety.

How has your recovery routine changed since using KYMIRA products?

I now spend much less time utilising other forms of self-managed recovery. The reduction in DOMS has been significant, so it's extremely rare now to find myself using a foam roller for 5-10 minutes before a session anymore. Instead, I can dive straight into my prepatory training - and this has been the exact same for many of the athletes I am working with. I no longer need to spend the first 5-10 minutes navigating problem areas and sites, and can instead spend the time delving into the training that matters most to them.

“The choice is between an hour of intense treatment with a sports therapist or pulling on a pair of leggings - which is costing us more, and which is more logistically feasible?
